artificial selection the practice by which humans select plants or animals for breeding based on desired traits
natural selection the process by which organisms that inherit advantageous traits tend to reproduce more successfully than other organisms do
variation within a species there are naturally occurring differences in traits
mutation an important source of variation, or change in genetic material
adaptation an inherited trait that helps and organism survive and reproduce in its environment
extinction occurs when all members of a species have died
fossil the remains or imprints of once-living organisms
fossil record all of the fossils that have been discovered make up
geologic time scale the standard method used to divide Earth's long 4.6 billion year natural history into manageable parts
