| mutation | an important source of variation, or change in genetic material |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that helps and organism survive and reproduce in its environment |
| extinction | occurs when all members of a species have died |
| fossil | the remains or imprints of once-living organisms |
| fossil record | all of the fossils that have been discovered make up |
| geologic time scale | the standard method used to divide Earth's long 4.6 billion year natural history into manageable parts |
