The Ear

QuestionAnswer
The ear is divided into 3 parts. What are they? External, middle, inner ear
The external ear is the part you see. It is composed of the BLANK and the BLANK. Auricle and external auditory canal.
The auricle is also known as the WHAT? Pinna (latin for "wing")
The auricle or pinna is composed of WHAT covered by a layer of loose fitting skin. Cartilage
The auricle functions like a satellite dish gathering WHAT? Sound waves
The auricle/pinna opens into the WHAT, a passageway for sound waves to enter the ear? External auditory canal
The external auditory canal is hollowed out of the temporal bone and extends to the eardrum or WHAT? Tympanic membrane.
The tympanic membrane separates the external ear from the WHAT ear? Middle
The middle ear is a small air-filled chamber located between the tympanic membrane at one end and a WHAT wall at the other end. Bony
This part of the ear contains several structures: tympanic membrane, 3 tiny bones, several small muscles, and the eustachian tube. What part of the ear is it? Middle ear
The tympanic membrane is composed primarily of connective tissue and has a rich supply of BLANK and BLANK. Nerves and blood vessels
The BLANK vibrates in response to sound waves entering the ear through the external auditory canal. Tympanic membrane
The vibration of the tympanic membrane is passed on to the tiny WHAT in the middle ear? Bones
The middle ear contains three tiny bones also called WHAT? Ossicles
The three bones/ossicles in the middle ear are called WHAT? Maleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup)
The bones/ossicles transmit vibration from the tympanic membrane to the WHAT, a membranous structure that separates the middle ear from the inner ear. Oval window
The middle ear has a passageway connecting to the the WHAT or throat. Pharynx
The passageway that connects the middle ear to the pharynx/throat is called the auditory tube or WHAT? Eustachian tube
The purpose of the eustachian tube is to equalize the WHAT on both sides of the of the tympanic membrane by permitting air to pass from the pharynx into the middle ear. Pressure
The inner ear has 3 parts. What are they called? Vestibule, semi-circular canals, cochlea
The cochlea is concerned with WHAT? Hearing
The vestibule and semicircular canals are concerned with WHAT? Balance
The cochlea is a WHAT shaped part of the bony labyrinth? Snail shaped
Sitting on a membrane within the cochlea are the receptors for WHAT? Hearing
The receptors are cells that contain tiny hairs called the WHAT? Organ of Corti
The receptor cells with tiny hairs called organ of Corti are stimulated by the bending of the hairs, therefore the receptors are classified as WHAT type of receptors? Mechanoreceptors
The vestibule and semicircular canals are collectively called WHAT? Vestibular apparatus
The receptors for balance are WHAT type of receptors and are located within the semicircular canals and vestibule. Mechanoreceptors
