Geology
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Crust | the outermost layer of the Earth; solid |
Mantle | the layer of the earth between the crust and the core; liquid |
Inner Core | the centermost part of the Earth; solid |
Outer Core | a flowing layer near the center of the Earth; liquid |
Lithosphere/Geosphere | the solid part of the earth consisting of the crust and outer mantle (now called Geosphere) |
Asthenosphere | the flowing layer in the upper mantle |
role of the outer core | creates Earth's magnetic field |
features of the oceanic crust | thinner and more dense crust made of basalt rock |
features of the continental crust | thicker and less dense crust made of granite rock |
two layers capable of convection | outer core and asthenosphere |
two layers the are entirely solid | crust (technically also the lithosphere) and inner core |
reason Earth has different layers | different materials in each layer sort by density |
hottest layer of Earth | inner core |
most dense layer of Earth | inner core |
least dense layer of Earth | crust |
Convection | hot material rises, cools, condenses, sinks, warms up and cycles in this way |
Order of Earth's Layers (Going Down) | Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core |
