Geology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Crust | the outermost layer of the Earth; solid |
| Mantle | the layer of the earth between the crust and the core; liquid |
| Inner Core | the centermost part of the Earth; solid |
| Outer Core | a flowing layer near the center of the Earth; liquid |
| Lithosphere/Geosphere | the solid part of the earth consisting of the crust and outer mantle (now called Geosphere) |
| Asthenosphere | the flowing layer in the upper mantle |
| role of the outer core | creates Earth's magnetic field |
| features of the oceanic crust | thinner and more dense crust made of basalt rock |
| features of the continental crust | thicker and less dense crust made of granite rock |
| two layers capable of convection | outer core and asthenosphere |
| two layers the are entirely solid | crust (technically also the lithosphere) and inner core |
| reason Earth has different layers | different materials in each layer sort by density |
| hottest layer of Earth | inner core |
| most dense layer of Earth | inner core |
| least dense layer of Earth | crust |
| Convection | hot material rises, cools, condenses, sinks, warms up and cycles in this way |
| Order of Earth's Layers (Going Down) | Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core |
