rocks a naturally occurring solid substance made of one or more minerals
minerals naturally occurring, crystalline solid material with specific properties
geologist scientists who study changes on and under the earth’s surface
translucent transmitting light partially; semitransparent (image is blurry)
transparent the ability to transmit light clearly so that an object can be seen through it
opaque a material that is not able to transmit light (you cannot see through it)
properties the characteristics of an element, such as the physical qualities (color, hardness, crystal shape)
luster the shininess of a mineral (brilliant, glassy, dull)
Mohs Hardness Scale • rates hardness • talc (1) to diamond (10) • objects with higher rating can scratch objects with lower ratings
light refraction change in direction of light: seeing one image or two through an object
transparency How much light can be seen through an object
rock cycle ongoing processes that form and break down rocks
igneous rocks formed from the cooling of magma (molten or melted rock below the earth’s surface)
metamorphic rocks formed by changing pressure or heat
sedimentary rocks formed from sediments that have been cemented together
sediment small bits of decomposed earth materials, such as rocks, minerals, and shells
fossils the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in rock
erosion The earth’s process by which earth materials are removed from one place and transported elsewhere; the wearing away
natural resource any substance formed by nature that is useful
renewable resource • materials that are naturally replaced by natural processes • water, plants, animals
nonrenewable resource • materials that cannot be easily replaced by natural processes • petroleum, coal, natural gas, many minerals
