Poetry

TermDefinition
poetry Genre that uses rhyming/non-rhyming words to express feelings and thoughts.
verse A Line in a poem.
rhythm Likeness of sounds or pattern of beats. (meter)
stanza Group of lines in a poem. (paragraph)
free verse A poem that does NOT rhyme
lyric MUSICAL verse that conveys powerful feelings
metaphor Compares two things that aren't alike but have something in common
simile Compares two things that aren't alike using the words “like” or “as.”
personification To give qualities of a person to something that isn't human/or a living thing
alliteration The occurrence of the same letter or sound
onomatopoeia Sound word
idiom An expression that doesn't mean exactly what it says
hyperbole exaggeration that cannot be true.
