Muscular System

QuestionAnswer
This muscle appears striated (striped) and is controlled voluntarily. I choose to move my arm. These muscles related to movement, posture and stabilize joints. What type of muscle is this? Skeletal muscle. (striated, voluntary)
This muscle is generally found in the walls of the viscera, such as the stomach. It is smooth and functions automatically. Visceral muscle. (non-striated, involuntary)
The characteristic of smooth muscle or visceral muscle contraction that allows for a continuous partial contraction of the smooth muscle is called? Smooth muscle tone
Smooth or visceral muscle is stretchy allowing walls of uterus, bladder, stomach to expand to store contents. Contraction of the smooth muscle then BLANK it's content. Expels
Cardiac muscle is only found in the what? Heart
Cardiac muscle is classified as WHAT and WHAT? Striated, involuntary
A large skeletal muscle is surrounded by layers of a tough connective tissue called? Fascia
The outer layer of the fascia is called the what? Epimysium
The smaller bundles of muscle fibers are covered by the what? Perimysium
The bundles of muscle fibers are called what? Fascicles
Individual muscle fibers that are found within the fascicles are surrounded by a third layer of connective tissue called the what? Endomysium
The epimysium, permysium and endomysium extend toward and attach to bone as a what? Tendon
Muscles form attachment to other structures in 3 ways. What attaches the muscle to the bone? Tendon
Muscles form attachments in 3 ways. In this way the muscle attaches BLANK to a bone or to soft tissue. Directly
Muscles form attachments in 3 ways. In this way, a flat sheetlike fascia called WHAT connects muscle to muscle or muscle to bone. Aponeurosis
If a single electrical stimulus is delivered to a muscle fiber, the fiber contracts and then fully relaxes. This single muscle response is called a WHAT? Twitch
Sustained muscle contraction caused by repeated stimulation is called WHAT? Tetanus
A normal, continuous state of partial muscle contraction is referred to as WHAT? Tonus or muscle tone (one group of muscle fibers contract while others relax)
The terms Origin and Insertion refer to the sites of muscle attachment. Most muscles cross or span at least one joint. The origin of the muscle attaches to the WHAT bone? Stationary bone. E.G. The origin of the biceps brachii is the scapula, and the insertion is on the radius. On contraction of the bicepts brachii, the radius (insertion) is pulled toward the scapula (origin)
Origin and Insertion refer to the sites of muscle attachment. The insertion of the muscle attaches to the more WHAT bone? Moveable
The "chief muscle" responsible for most of the muscle movement is called the WHAT? Prime mover
The "helper muscles" that assist the prime mover are called WHAT? Synergists
The muscles that oppose the action of another muscle are the WHAT? Antagonists. E.G. the contraction of the biceps brachii flexes the forearm at the elbow. The triceps brachii (posterior arm) is the antagonist. It opposes the action of the biceps brachii by extending the forearm.
Overuse of muscles, increasing size is called WHAT? Hypertrophy
Underuse of muscles, wasting away or decrease in size is called what? Atrophy
If a muscle is immobilized for a prolonged period, it may develop a WHAT? An abnormal formation of fibrous tissue within the muscle and the muscle "freezes" in a flexed position. Contracture
