Chapter 10, Lesson 2

QuestionAnswer
Solar System a group of objects in space that revolve around a star in the center, plus the star itself.
Sun the star in our solar system
Planet a large object that orbits a star.
Moon a smaller object that orbits a planet.
Inner Planets There are 8 planets in our solar system. They are grouped as ______________(closer to the sun) They are separated by a ring of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter.
Outer Planets There are 8 planets in our solar system. They are grouped as ______________ (farther from the sun). They are separated by a ring of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter.
Inner Planets (small, rocky surfaces, no more than 2 moons)
Mercury closest planet to the sun and about the size of Earth's moon
Venus the third brightest object in the sky, and it's about the size of Earth
Earth the only planet that is known to have life, and whose surface is mostly water
Mars called the Red Planet because it looks red from Earth and it has huge dust storms that last for months
Asteroid Belt is located between the inner and outer planets.
Outer Planets (huge, made mostly of gases, many moons, rings)
Jupiter the largest planet in our solar system and it has a Great Red Spot, with at least 63 moons
Saturn has rings that are visible from Earth through a telescope, with at least 31 moons
Uranus rotates on its side as it orbits the sun and has at least 27 moons
Neptune very windy, it's one of the windiest in the solar system. Its atmosphere is made of hydrogen and helium.
Pluto a dwarf planet. It is unlike the other outer planets. It was the 9th planet for over 80 years. In 2006 scientists decided that it was NOT a planet because it is not in a clear orbit around the sun.
Asteroids orbit the sun, contains bits of rock and metal, between 1 and 1000 km in diameter, and most are found in a belt between Mars and Jupiter
Comets a ball of rock, ice, and frozen gases, most are less than 10 km across, the tail can be 100,000 km long
