Anatomy The study of the STRUCTURE of organisms and their organ systems.
Physiology The study of how an organism maintains homeostasis.
Homeostasis The maintained balance of energy, heat, temperature, chemicals, pressure, and water to maintain a life system.
Negative Feedback A system that results in the reduction of a stimulus which causes homeostatic indicators to fall out of range.
Ghrelin Stimulates hunger pangs; released from cells in the stomach; levels increase before meals, but fall after. Appetite Enhancer.
Leptin Produced by adipose tissue as a chemical indicator of body fat levels.
PYY Appetite suppressant
Insulin Appetite suppressant
Stretch Receptors Cells in the stomach which inhibit hunger pangs as the stomach stretches.
Thrifty Gene Hypothesis Humans with genes that promote energy storage and slow burning of calories are more likely to survive and pass on their genes.
Mucin Produced by salivary glands. Lubricates mouth and is a buffer against acidic Ph of the oral cavity to protect teeth.
Pepsinogen / HCl Pepsinogen produced by 'cheif cells' in the stomach. Inactive form of the enzyme. HCl activates activates it. Active form is Peptin.
Peptin Breaks down protiens into amino acids.
Salivary Amylase Produced in the oral cavity. Breaks down carbohydrates
