Reproduction in Plants and Animals Vocabulary

Anther The part of a flower that contains the pollen; located at the end of the stamen
Behavior What a plant or animal does
Ovary A female reproductive organ that produces eggs
Petals The colorful, leaflike structures that encircle the center part of the flower
Pistil The female structure of the flower; contains the stigma, style, and ovary
Pollen Fine to coarse particles spread from flowers and seeds of plants
Pollination The process of fertilizing flowers by transferring pollen from the male to female parts
Reproduction The process by which organisms produce more of their own kind
Specialized Having characteristics that allow specific functions to be performed
Stamen The male structure of the flower; contains the anther and filament
Asexual Reproduction A method of reproduction that requires only one parent
Sexual Reproduction A method of reproduction that requires both a male and female parent
Adaptations Specialized characteristics that help a species become better suited to its environment or provide benefits for survival and reproduction
Species A group of organisms with similar characteristics that are able to interbreed or exchange genetic material
Offspring The product of the reproductive processes of an animal or plant
Genetics The study of how different qualities, called traits, are passed down from organisms to their offspring
Biotic Factors Living things in an environment that affect an organisms survival
Abiotic Factors Non-living things or conditions in an environment that affect an organisms survival
Environmental Factors Any factor, whether abiotic or biotic, that influences living organisms
Genetic Factors Things that result from the specific alleles carried by an individual
Growth Process of increasing in size and maturity
Organism A self-contained living thing
Adaptation A process by which a population becomes better suited to its environment by increasing the frequencies of alleles that provide benefits to survival and reproduction
