Food chains and food webs science vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| food chain | A sequence of living things in which each one feeds on the living thing below it. |
| food web | A food web is a model made of intersecting food chains. |
| photosynthesis | A process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar from carbon dioxide and water. |
| producer | A living thing (almost always a plant) that takes energy from the sun and make its own food. They are found in the first level of a food web. |
| consumer | Living creatures that eat organisms from a different population. |
| apex predator | An animal found at the top of a food web and is not eaten by any other animals. Examples include sharks, owls and lions. |
| decomposer | Living things that break down dead and decaying organisms. The most common examples are bacteria and fungi. |
| bacteria | Tiny microscopic living things that are everywhere around us and break down dead and decaying matter. We can only see them with a very powerful microscope. |
| fungi | Living things like a mushroom, mold, or yeast, that helps break down dead and decaying matter. |
| extinction | A living thing that is no longer found alive anywhere on Earth today. |
| compost | A substance that is usually made by gathering plant material such as leaves and vegetable peels into a pile and letting it decompose over many months thanks to bacteria and fungi. It can be used as fertilizer for plants. |

| carnivores | animals that eat other animals (meat) |
| omnivores | animals that eat both meat and plants |
| overhunting | when a species or animals is hunted too much, it makes an ecosystem out of balance |
| great horned owl | an example of an apex predator |
| earthworms | an example of a decomposer |
| mushrooms | an example of a fungus |
| zebras | an example of a herbivore |
| lions | an example of a carnivore |
| nutrients | healthy building blocks in food that living things need |
