Cell Components
6th Grade Cell Anatomy
| Parts of the Cell | Job/Function |
|---|---|
| Cytoplasm | "Fluid" that fills the cells |
| Nucleus | Controls the activities of a cell & Protects the DNA |
| Nucleolus | Makes ribosomes |
| Ribosomes | Job is to make proteins for construction and eventually the proteins become enzymes in the Rough ER |
| Rough ER | Makes proteins that become enzymes |
| Smooth ER | Makes fats |
| Golgi Aparatus | Known as the Post Office of the Cell |
| Golgi Aparatus | Transports proteins from Rough ER and "modifies" them to make enzymes |
| Golgi Aparatus | Ships vesicles around or out of the cell |
| Mitchondria | Breaks down food (usually sugar) and turns into energy for the cell |
| Lysosome | Carries digestive chemicals (enzymes) |
| Lysosome | Breaks down worn-out organelles, waste, or something the cell is trying to kill |
| Vacuole | Stores materials for a cell |
| Vacuole | For plant cells, can help the cells shrink/grow for the overall plant to move towards sunlight |
| Chloroplast | Does photosynthesis (uses sunlight, CO2, and water to make sugar) |
| Centrioles | Move DNA around when a cell copies itself (transport trucks) |
| Cytoskeleton or Microtubules | Keep or change the shape of the cell |
