6th Grade Cell Anatomy

Parts of the CellJob/Function
Cytoplasm "Fluid" that fills the cells
Nucleus Controls the activities of a cell & Protects the DNA
Nucleolus Makes ribosomes
Ribosomes Job is to make proteins for construction and eventually the proteins become enzymes in the Rough ER
Rough ER Makes proteins that become enzymes
Smooth ER Makes fats
Golgi Aparatus Known as the Post Office of the Cell
Golgi Aparatus Transports proteins from Rough ER and "modifies" them to make enzymes
Golgi Aparatus Ships vesicles around or out of the cell
Mitchondria Breaks down food (usually sugar) and turns into energy for the cell
Lysosome Carries digestive chemicals (enzymes)
Lysosome Breaks down worn-out organelles, waste, or something the cell is trying to kill
Vacuole Stores materials for a cell
Vacuole For plant cells, can help the cells shrink/grow for the overall plant to move towards sunlight
Chloroplast Does photosynthesis (uses sunlight, CO2, and water to make sugar)
Centrioles Move DNA around when a cell copies itself (transport trucks)
Cytoskeleton or Microtubules Keep or change the shape of the cell
