QuestionAnswer
what are fossils? remains or traces of animals, plants, or other organisms from remote past
what are different types of fossilization? Petrification (Replacement, Permineralization), Molds and Casts, Carbonization, Fossil resin, tar and ice, trace fossils
what is the difference between relative and absolute age?
what does the fossil record tell scientists
what organisms today have similarities to organisms or the past
how big can fossils be? as small as bacteria or as giant as a dinosaur
what rock are fossils found in? sedimentary rock
what is it called to study fossils? Paleontology
tar and ice when animals are trapped or stuck in tar/ice scientists can find them still in full form
fossil resin it is a sticky substance where insects or plants g o in there so they have the body and the DNA
trace fossils it tracks indirect evidence that past life was on the earth. examples: footprints, feces, tracks, burrows
petrification results in organic material converting into stone or a similar substance.
replacement when water dissolves the original material and replaces them with material like calcite, silica, pyrite, hematite
permineralization groundwater carries dissolved minerals into pores and cavities of bone, wood, or shells. original material is preserved than replaced
mold and casts mold: organism dies and there is no filling of the cavity with minerals. cast: organism dies and the cavity fills with minerals and maybe sand or clay. Both times shells are fossilized through these processes
Carbonization the process by which all substances of plants and animals decay, except carbon. it leaves a carbon fill on the sedimentary rock. the process particularly occurs with fish and plants.
what was the first living thing found on earth? Stromatolites (3.5 b.y.)
what theory do fossil fuels support? the continental drift theory
