Fossils Vocab

TermDefinition
Fossil Preserved remains or traces of animals, plants and other organisms from the remote past.
Sedimentary Rocks Formed in layers by the deposition of weathered rocks, sediments are pressed and cemented together.
Ammonites One of the first known fossils found along with Stromatolites.
Stromatolites Rock like structures built by blue-green algae, first forms of life on earth and are the oldest known fossils.
Trace Fossil Something that shows how an organism lived.
Index Fossil One common fossil in a specific layer that helps us determine when that time period ended,or where the layer stops.
Casts Sediment and mineral forms a cast around the original organism s bones preserving them.
Molds Sediment and mineral replace the original bone leaving a mold in the earth.
Relative Age less accurate form of dating
Absolute Age More accurate form of dating
Geologic Time Scale The fossil record is recorded here.
Fossil Record History of life as documented by fossils that tells us how they changed over millions of years.
Coprolite One of the first known fossils found along with Stromatolites.
Permineralization Groundwater carries dissolved minerals into the pores and cavities of bone, wood, or shells. The original is preserved.
Petrification Replacement and Permineralization which both result in organic material . Ex: Petrified Wood
Carbonization When a carbon film is left on the rock from an organism.
Law of Superposition Geologists assume the newest rock layers are on top of the older ones, unless some type of disturbance occurs. Determines the age of fossils.
Burrows A type of trace fossil
Paleontologist Someone who studies Fossils.
Fossil Resin Fossil resin, which is called amber, is when an organism gets stuck in tree resin. When the resin hardens it preserves the organism inside so well that DNA can be extracted from it.
Replacement Happens when water dissolves the original solid material and replaces them with mineral matter. The original is replaced.
Tar and Ice When an organism gets stuck in tar or ice their body is preserved.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
