|---|---|
| Weather | The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place. |
| Atmosphere | The envelope of gasses that surrounds the planet. |
| Water Vapor | Is water in the form of a gas. |
| Density | The amount of mass in a given volume of air. |
| Air Pressure | The result of the weight of a column of air pushing on an area. |
| Barometer | An instrument that is used to measure air pressure. |
| Mercury Barometer | Consists of a long glass tube that is closed at one end and open at another. The closed end almost a vacuum. The open end rests in a dish of merucury. |
| Aneroid Barometer | Has a airtight chamber that is sensitive to changes in air pressure. |
| Altitude | The distance above sea level. |
| Troposphere | Tropo-turning or changing |
| Mesospeare | Meso-middle |
| Ionosphere | Begins about 80 kilometers above the surface ,and extends to about 400 kilometers |
| Stratosphere | Extends from the top of the troposphere to about 50 kilometers above the surface. |
| Thermosphere | The lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. |
| Exosphere | The outer layer. |
| Electromagnetic Waves | A form of energy that can move through the vacuum of space. |
| Radiation | The direct transfer of electromagnetic waves. |
| Infrared Radiation | A form of electromagnetic waves that have wavelengths that are longer than wavelengths for red lights. |
| Ultraviolet Radiation | A invisible form of energy with wavelengths that are shorter than wavelengths for violet waves. |
| Scattering | When dust-size particles and gases in the atmosphere disperse light in all direction. |
| Greenhouse Effect | The trapping of heat near a planet's surface by certain gases in the planet's atmosphere |
| Wind | The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an of low pressure. |
| Anemometer | Three or four cups mounted on the end of spokes hat spin on an axle. |
| Windchill Factor | The increased chilling of wind |
| Local Wind | Wind that blows over short distances |
| Sea Breeze | When cool air blows inland from over the water and moves underneath the warm air . |
| Land Breeze | A reversed sea breeze. |
| Global Winds | Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances. |
| Coriolis Effect | The effect of Earth's rotation on the direction of winds and currents. |
| Latitude | The distance from the equator measured in degrees. |
