Unit 4

AP Biology/ Unit 4 Vocabulary- Gonzalez G.

TermDefinition
Target Cell Target
Ligand Ligand
Phosphorylation The process of generation ATP from ADP and phosphate by means of chemiosmosis, using a proton-motive force generated across the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast or the membrane of certain prokaryotes during the light reactions of photosynthesis
Receptor Protein Receptor
Secondary Messenger A small, nonprotein, water-soluble molecule or ion, such as a calcium ion or cyclic AMP, that relays a signal to a cell's interior in response to a signaling molecules bound by a signal receptor protein
Signal Amplification Amplification
Signal Transduction The linkage of a mechanical, chemical, or electromagnetic stimulus to a specific cellular response
Response the change in a specific cellular activity brought about by a transduced signal form outside the cell
Feedback Feedback
Negative Feedback A form of regulation in which accumulation of an end product of a process slows the process; in physiology, a primary mechanism of homeostasis, whereby that counteracts the initial change.
Positive Feedback A form of regulation in which an ends product of a process speeds up that process; a control mechanism in which a change in variable trigger a response that reinforces or amplifies the change
Asexual Reproduction Reproduction
Cell Cycle An ordered sequence of events in the life a cell, form its origin in the division into two
Interphase Interphase
Mitosis A process of nuclear division in eukaryotic cells conventionally divided into five stages
Cancer Cancer
Cyclin A cellular proteins that occurs in a cyclically fluctuating concentration and that plays an important role in regulating the cell cycle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
