Matter

Matter, Mixtures, & Substances

TermDefinition
Matter A substance that has mass and takes up space.
Pure Substance A substance made up of only one type of atom/element, one type of molecule, or two or more different kinds of atoms.
Element Substances made up of one kind of atom that cannot be changed into a simpler substance.
Compound Substances made up of two or more different atoms or elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture Made up of two or more different substances that retain their own individual properties and are physically mixed together.
Heterogeneous Mixture Type of mixture that is not uniformly throughout "not evenly mixed". The parts "components" can be easily seen and visibly distinguished "you can see or tell apart".
Homogeneous Mixture Type of mixture that is uniformly throughout "evenly mixed". The mixture cannot be visibly distinguished " cannot be easily seen". Also called a solution.
Mass The amount of matter an object contains. It is measured in grams.
Volume How much space an object takes up. It is measured in milliliters or cubic centimeters.
Density The mass of a substance per unit of volume.
balance The tool used to measure mass.
beaker or graduated cylinder The tool used to measure liquid volume
ruler, measuring tape, or meter stick The tool used to measure the volume of a rectangular shaped object.
grams (g) The unit for mass.
mililiters (ml) or cubic centimeter (cm3) The unit for volume.
g/ml or g/cm3 The unit for density.
1 g/ml or 1 g/cm3 The density for water.
