| colloid | A mixture without small undissolved particles that do not settle out. |
| polar molecule | A molecule that has a electrically charged areas. |
| solution | A mixture in which one substance is dissolved into another substance. |
| specific heat | The amount of thermal energy required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one degree Celsius. |
| suspension | A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration. |
| condensation | The process by which a gas such as water vapor turns into a liquid such as water. |
| hydroelectric power | Electricity produced by the kinetic energy of water moving over a waterfall or dam. |
| evaporation | The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid such as water, absorb enough energy to change to a gaseous state, such as water vapor. |
| solute | The part of a solution that is present in a lesser amount and dissolves by the solvent. |
| solvent | The part of a solution that is present in the largest amount and dissolves the solute. |
| surface tension | The tightness across the surface of water caused by the polar water molecules pulling on each other. |
| capillary action | The combined force of attraction among water molecules and with the molecules of surrounding materials. |
