Ocean Vocab Words
About the Ocean and its features.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Tides | The rise and fall of ocean levels. Affected by gravity. |
Volcanic Islands | A build up of cooled lava, breaks the surface of the ocean. |
Salinity | Measure of the amount of dissolved salt in the water. |
Convection | Warm water to the surface, cold water to the bottom of the ocean. |
Seamount | Undersea mountains formed by volcanic activity. |
Continental Shelf | Edge of continent that lies under the ocean. Relatively shallow. |
Continental Slope | A slope between the edge of the continental shelf and the ocean floor. |
Abyssal Plain | A large area of really flat or gently sloping ocean floor just offshore from a continent. |
Oceanic Trench | A long, narrow, deep depression in the ocean floor. Formed when plates collide. |
Continental Rise | Final boundary between continental crust and oceanic crust. |
Thermohaline | The temperature and salt content of water. |
Temperature | Can affect density. Cold-More dense, Warm-Less dense. |
Fluid | It can flow. All liquids and gases. |
Current | The movement of fluid. |
Gravity | A downward force. What water needs to move. |
Sun | Heats the planet unequally which creates convection currents that cause ocean currents. |
Moon | Causes ocean tides and tidal currents. Pulls the water with a gravitational pull. |
Hydrothermal Vent | A fissure in a plant's surface from which geothermally heated water is released. |
