Ocean Vocab Words

About the Ocean and its features.

TermDefinition
Tides The rise and fall of ocean levels. Affected by gravity.
Volcanic Islands A build up of cooled lava, breaks the surface of the ocean.
Salinity Measure of the amount of dissolved salt in the water.
Convection Warm water to the surface, cold water to the bottom of the ocean.
Seamount Undersea mountains formed by volcanic activity.
Continental Shelf Edge of continent that lies under the ocean. Relatively shallow.
Continental Slope A slope between the edge of the continental shelf and the ocean floor.
Abyssal Plain A large area of really flat or gently sloping ocean floor just offshore from a continent.
Oceanic Trench A long, narrow, deep depression in the ocean floor. Formed when plates collide.
Continental Rise Final boundary between continental crust and oceanic crust.
Thermohaline The temperature and salt content of water.
Temperature Can affect density. Cold-More dense, Warm-Less dense.
Fluid It can flow. All liquids and gases.
Current The movement of fluid.
Gravity A downward force. What water needs to move.
Sun Heats the planet unequally which creates convection currents that cause ocean currents.
Moon Causes ocean tides and tidal currents. Pulls the water with a gravitational pull.
Hydrothermal Vent A fissure in a plant's surface from which geothermally heated water is released.
