Graphic novel vocab.

| narrative box | rectangles or squares in which a narrator or a character from the story shares special information with the readers |
| vignette | a borderless panel |
| speech bubble | represents the dialogue of a given character in the comic |
| panel | a single "moment" in comics; fundamental unit of comic storytelling |
| inset panel | a panel inside the border of another panel |
| panel border | the lines line that inclose the image |
| long shot | a full figure shot emphasizing the background and placement of characters |
| medium shot | showing parts of the body of one or more characters |
| close up | usually a torso or head shot when dealing with characters; can also be a zoom in of an object |
| background | the scenery or ground behind something/someone |
| emenata | drawn elements that express information (motion, impact, emotions) not normally visible in real life |
| tier | horizontal row of panels |
| spread | two page layout |
| bleed | image runs of page |
| full page bleed | image runs off page on all sides |
| splash page | full page image , not necessarily a bleed |
| gutter | space between panels |
| thought bubble | represents the thoughts of a given character in the comic |
