Flow of Matter
in the Environment
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| microorganism | a living thing that is too small to be seen with the naked eye |
| food chain | sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another |
| food web | model showing the many food chains linked together to show the feeding relationships of organisms in an ecosystem |
| energy pyramid | a graphical representation, showing the flow of energy at each trophic level in an ecosystem |
| nutrient | food, or any nourishing substances used by an organism required for growth, repair, and normal metabolism |
| nitrogen fixation | a process in which nitrogen gas (N2) from the atmosphere is incorporated into the tissue of certain plants |
| decomposers | an organism that decomposes, or breaks down, organic material such as the remains of dead organisms |
| autotroph | an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals |
| producer | organisms capable of creating simple carbohydrates such as glucose, from gaseous carbon dioxide |
| photosynthesis | a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy |
| carnivore | an animal that eats a diet consisting mainly of meat |
| consumer | organisms that need to eat (i.e. consume) food to obtain their energy |
| herbivore | an organism that mostly feeds on plants |
| omnivore | an animal that has the ability to eat and survive on both plants and animals |
| detritivore | an organism that eats dead or decaying plants or animals as food |
| biomass | the mass of living organisms in a given area or ecosystem at a given time |
| heterotroph | an organism that cannot produce its own food, instead it gets nutrition from other sources: mainly plant or animal matter. |
| trophic level | the trophic level of an organism is the number of steps it is from the start of the chain, web, or energy pyramid including or from the producers |
