Weather and Erosion
Weather and erosion study guide
| weathering | the breaking down of rock |
| erosion | the movement of sediment |
| deposition | dropping sediment in a new place |
| tectonic plates | gigantic plates of floating rock that continents lay on |
| convergent boundary | two plates come together and can create spectacular mountain ranges |
| divergent boundary | two plates move apart and can create intense volcanic activity |
| transform | plates slide against each other |
| fault line | can sometimes create large earthquakes; visible breaks in the ground |
| What is a volcano? | It is a mountain that opens downward into a pool of molten lava below Earth's surface. |
| Seismograph | measures the strength and compares it to the Richter scale |
| Where are earthquakes most likely to occur? | Near the Ring of Fire but they can happen anywhere |
| When do earthquakes happen? | The tectonic plates slip past one another near fault lines and create shaking of the earth's surface |
