Photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
Chloroplasts Organelle where photosynthesis takes place
Autotroph an organism that makes its own food through the process of photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
ATP and NADPH energy molecules created in the light-dependent phase - sent to the light-independent phase
Thylakoid small discs within the chloroplast where light is absorbed by chlorophyll and begins the light-dependent reaction
Photosynthesis The process where autotrophs convert light energy into chemical energy (glucose)
Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis light intensity, temperature, CO2 levels, availability of water
C6H12O6 The chemical formula for glucose, the product of photosynthesis that is used for energy
6CO2 + 6H2O -----------> C6H12O6 + 6O2 The overall chemical formula for the process of photosynthesis
O2 Oxygen The product of the light-dependent reaction that is released and no longer used within the process.
CO2 Carbon Dioxide The reactant of photosynthesis that comes from the atmosphere and is used in the light-independent phase to make glucose.
H2O Water The reactant of photosynthesis that comes from the soil through the roots and is used to eventually make ATP and NADPH energy molecules
Sunlight The original energy source for all producers within an ecosystem.
Stroma The substance and area in the chloroplast where the light-independent reaction takes place.
Light-dependent reaction Used to capture light energy and transfer chemical energy (ATP and NADPH) to the light-independent reaction.
Chlorophyll a The main pigment and substance that absorbs light within the thylakoid.
Accessory Pigments Pigments like carotenoids that assist in absorbing energy that chlorophyll doesn't.....what you see in the Fall
Chromatography A technique used to separate pigments from one another
Light-independent reaction Chemical energy from the light-dependent reaction and CO2 from the atmosphere are used to create glucose
Heterotroph an organism that cannot make its own food, and obtains nutrients through other sources of organic carbon

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
