| Hypothesis | a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable. |
| Experiment | a test, trial, or tentative procedure; an act or operation for the purpose of discovering something unknown or of testing a principle, supposition, etc. |
| Dependent Variable | the factor that changes as a result of changes to the independent variable in an experiment; also called responding variable. |
| Independent Variable | the one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called manipulated variable. |
| Constant | not changing or varying; uniform; regular; invariable |
| Control | a person, group, event, etc., that is used as a constant and unchanging standard of comparison in scientific experimentation. |
| Bias | a subjective belief that affects a person’s attitude toward something; an error in the design of an experiment that affects the results of the experiment. |
| Source of error | cause the results of a research study to interpreted incorrectly. |
| Theory | proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural and subject to experimentation |
| Scientific Law | a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some aspect of the universe. |
| Model | a representation of a complex object or process, used to help people understand a concept that they cannot observe directly. |

| Micro | prefix meaning “one millionth” |
| Nano | in the names of units of measure it has the specific sense “one billionth” |
| Kilo | prefix meaning “thousand” |
| Frequency distribution | range of conditions, often represented in graph form, in which each item is paired with the number of observed events or measurements meeting those conditions |
| Scatterplot | graph that plots along two axes at right angles to each other the relationship between two variable quantities |
| Line plot | graphic representation in which marks above a number line indicate the frequency of each value |
| Histogram | graph that represents the frequency of values of a quantity by vertical rectangles of varying heights and widths |
