| Condensation | change from a gas to a liquid; forms clouds |
| Evaporation | change from a liquid to a gas at temperatures below boiling |
| Freezing | changing from a liquid to a solid |
| Glacier | a large slow moving body of snow and ice |
| Hail | frozen balls of ice that can be as large as grapefruit |
| Melting | changing from a solid to a liquid |
| Phase change | a change from one state of matter to another |
| Precipitation | water that falls to Earth's surface |
| Reservoir | a body of water |
| Runoff | water that moves across the surface of land into streams or rivers; sources include heavy rain |
| Sleet | frozen rain |
| Transpiration | the release of water vapor from the leaves of plants |
| Water cycle | the continuous movement of water from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back again |
| Accumulation | the collection of precipitation into rivers, lakes, and oceans |
| Sublimation | ice (solid) changing directly into water vapor (gas); skipping the liquid phase |
| Atmosphere | a blanket of air that surrounds the Earth |
| Infiltration | when surface water soaks into the soil |
| cloud | a mass of water droplets in the air |
| the sun | the source of energy that drives the water cycle |
| water vapor | the gas form of water |
