| land cover | vegetation and manufactured structures that cover land |
| land use | human activity that occur on land and are directly related to land |
| urban area | mostly developed land covered mainly with buildings and roads that has a human population of 2500 or more |
| rural area | sparsely populated rural areas also referred to as the country |
| urbanization | the shift of a population from country to city |
| infrastructure | an area made up of facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community |
| heat island | an area where the temperature is several degrees higher than the surrounding areas |
| sprawl | the spread of low-density urban or suburban development outward from an urban center |
| city planning | attempt to design cities to maximize their functionality and beauty |
| geographic information systems (GIS) | computerized system for storing, manipulating and viewing geographic data |
| zoning | classifying areas for different types of development and land use |
| urban growth boundary (UGB) | line that city planners draw on a map to separate urban areas and rural areas |
| smart growth | philosophy of urban growth focusing on economic and environment for sustainable growth and avoiding sprawl |
| ecological restoration | restoring native communities |
| greenway | strips of vegetated open spaces that connect parks or neighborhood located around rivers, streams and canals |
