Biology STAAR Vocabulary- Category 3

TermDefinition
Evolution The theory that all life shares a common ancestor
Fossil Preserved forms of past life
Biogeography The branch of biology that deals with the geographical distribution of plants and animals.
Homology A degree of similarity.
Adaptation Favorable traits that help an organism survive and reproduce.
Natural Selection The process if beneficial changes being passed down and harmful changes being weeded out over the generations.
Mutation Changes in the DNA of genes.
Recombination When meiosis occurs, alleles are shuffled around and then recombined to form a unique individual.
Genetic Drift The changing frequency of an allele occurring in a population over time due to chance.
Gene Flow The introduction of a new individual from one population to another.
Gene Pool A species' entire group of alleles.
Population A group of individuals of the same species living in the same place.
Gradualism Evolution that proceeds at a slow and steady rate over a long period of time.
Punctuated Equilibrium Evolution that is characterized by long periods without change, interrupted by periods of rapid change.
Speciation The process of forming a new species from an existing species.
Stasis Period of inactivity.
Binomial nomenclature A system of classification using two names.
taxonomy A branch of biology that deals with classifying and naming organisms.
Cladogram Diagram that shows evolutionary relationships.
Phylogeny Study of evolutionary relationships.
Dichotomous Key A taxonomic guide, using two possibilities for each characteristic, that helps people identify organisms.
Bacteria Kingdom Prokaryotes that consists of true bacteria and blue-green algae.
Archaea Kingdom Prokaryotic organisms that are often found in extreme environments that lack oxygen, are very hot and acidic.
Fungi Kingdom Consists of multicellular organisms with cell walls made of chitin. Includes mold, yeast and mushrooms.
