Mitosis

National 5 - Unit 2 - Key Area 1 - Mitosis

QuestionAnswer
Why do multicellular organisms carry out mitosis? For growth and repair of damaged cells
What word describes a cell with 2 matching sets of chromosomes? Diploid
Why is it important that new daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the original parent cell? To maintain the diploid chromosome complement OR to make sure that no genetic information is lost.
State the term for a cell with only one set of chromosomes. Haploid
In stage 2 of mitosis, chromosomes replicate to form two identical .. Chromatids
In stage 3 of mitosis, chromosomes line up along which part of the cell? The equator of the cell
In stage 3 of mitosis, what happens to the nucleus membrane? The nuclear membrane breaks down.
Which structures pull chromatids apart to opposite poles? Spindle fibres
State the name of a cell that is unspecialised. A stem cell
What are the two main sources of stem cells? Embryos and Adult tissues.
State the hierarchy that exists in multicellular organisms Cell -> Tissue -> Organ -> Organ System
What is a sperm cells function? To fertilise the egg
What is a sperm cells specialisation? It has a tail to swim
What is a red blood cells function? To carry oxygen around the body
What is a red blood cells specialisation? It has no nucleus OR contains haemoglobin OR they are biconcave in shape
What is a root hair cells function? To absorb water
What is a root hair cells specialisation? It has a large surface area
If the original cell has a diploid chromosome complement of 4, how many chromosomes will a daughter cell have? 4 (they always have the same number of chromosomes as the original cell)
If the original cell has a diploid chromosome complement of 46, how many chromosomes will the daughter cell have? 46 (they always have the same number of chromosomes as the original cell)
Are stem cells specialised or unspecialised? Unspecialised.
State two uses of stem cells. Growth and Repair
If a cell divides by mitosis every 5 minutes, how many cells would be present after 20 minutes? 16 cells
If a cell divides by mitosis every 20 minutes, how many cells would be present after 2 hours? 64 cells
Why is it important to maintain the diploid chromosomes complement? To ensure no genetic information is lost.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
