Chapter 9 Water Cycle Vocabulary

Water Cycle the movement of water from the surface of Earth and into the air and back again.
Water Vapor this is the gas form of water, it is in the air. As is rises into the air it becomes cooler
Precipitation water that falls back to Earth, can be rain, snow, sleet or hail.
Evaporation the process by which a liquid changes into a gas
Condensation the process by which a gas changes into a liquid, caused by the cooling of water vapor. (This can be seen on the outside of a cold drink glass, or a mirror after a shower.)
Clouds condensed water that cools and collects on dust particles.
Groundwater precipitation that soaks into the ground through small holes and then flows deeper through rock. (It is used for drinking water when wells are dug)
Runoff rain that is not soaked into the ground and flows into creeks and streams, and from there flows into rivers and then into the oceans.
Lotic moving bodies of water such as creeks, streams and rivers. They flow into other bodies of water
Lentic still bodies of water such as ponds and oceans. They do not flow into another body of water.
