Chapter 9 Water Cycle Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Water Cycle | the movement of water from the surface of Earth and into the air and back again. |
Water Vapor | this is the gas form of water, it is in the air. As is rises into the air it becomes cooler |
Precipitation | water that falls back to Earth, can be rain, snow, sleet or hail. |
Evaporation | the process by which a liquid changes into a gas |
Condensation | the process by which a gas changes into a liquid, caused by the cooling of water vapor. (This can be seen on the outside of a cold drink glass, or a mirror after a shower.) |
Clouds | condensed water that cools and collects on dust particles. |
Groundwater | precipitation that soaks into the ground through small holes and then flows deeper through rock. (It is used for drinking water when wells are dug) |
Runoff | rain that is not soaked into the ground and flows into creeks and streams, and from there flows into rivers and then into the oceans. |
Lotic | moving bodies of water such as creeks, streams and rivers. They flow into other bodies of water |
Lentic | still bodies of water such as ponds and oceans. They do not flow into another body of water. |
