| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Precipitation | this is part of the water cycle and it falls in 4 forms |
| Rain | (most common, liquid water, falls when air temp. is more than 32 degrees F) |
| Sleet | (frozen rain, caused when rain falls through a layer of freezing |
| Snow | (ice crystals, caused when air temp. is cold and vapor turns to ice) |
| Hail | (Round pieces of ice caused when rain freezes and falls to warmer air. Then raindrops coat the frozen rain. Frozen rain is then carried back to colder air, freezing it again. |
| Severe Storms | the sun's heat powers the water cycle and causes these |
| Thunderstorms | (lightning, strong wind, heavy rain, and tornadoes) |
| Tornadoes | (fast wind spiral, stretches from storm cloud to ground, 250 mph winds |
| Hurricanes | (large tropical storms, 74 mph winds, form over water, weaken when they hit land, calm center is called the "eye" |
| Storm Surge | huge bulge of water pushed onto land by a storm |
| Blizzards | (severe snowstorms that last for hours, strong winds, blowing snow, very low temperatures) |
| Weather Safety | listen to radio or TV stations, weather sirens, and stay inside a building unless officials make you evacuate the area |
