Earth’s Spheres

5th grade vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere is all of the gases surrounding Earth. That includes the air we breathe. The word “Atmos” means air.
What is the geosphere? The geosphere is all of Earth’s rocks and minerals that make up its surface. The word “Geo” means Earth.
What is the hydrosphere? The hydrosphere is all the water on planet Earth. The word “Hydro” means water.
What are earth’s four major spheres? The earth has 4 major spheres. The spheres are the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.
What is a system? A system is a term used for any complex whole, with smaller connected parts working together.
What is a cycle? A cycle is something that never stops. It has no beginning and has no end.
What is recycling? To reuse something that would have otherwise been thrown out or to turn it into something usable again instead of sending it to a landfill.
What is the Earth's crust? Earth's outermost and thinnest layer.
What is the Earth's mantle? Below the crust is the Earth's middle layer that makes up most of Earth's material.
What is the Earth's core? Earth's very center and made mostly of iron. It has an inner solid layer and liquid outer layer of the core.
What is the three layers of the Earth? crust (outer) mantle (middle) core (center)
What is the biosphere? The biosphere is all the life forms on Earth. That includes all the animals, humans, plants and trees. The word “Bio” means life.
