What does the atomic number of an element represent? The number of protons (and electrons) present in an elelment.
What is the name for each layer of electrons in an element? Shells.
What is an element? A substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is a diatomic molecule? A molecule that is made up of 2 atoms.
What are Chemical properties of an element? Characteristics of an element that determine how it will react with other substances
What are groups in the periodic table? Vertical columns of elements.
What sub-atomic particles are found in the nucleus of an element? Protons and Neutrons
Which sub-atomic particles have no mass? Electrons
What are periods in the periodic table? Horizontal rows of elements in the periodic table.
What are the Group 1 elements known as Alakali metals.
What are the physical properties of an element? The obsereable characteristics of the element by itself.
What are group 7 elements known as? Halogens
Name a Halogen? Fluorine or Chlorine or Bromine or Iodine or Astatine
What happens to the reactivity of Halogens as you move down the group? They become less reactive.
Name an alkali metal Lithium or Sodium or Potassium or Caesium or Francium.
What happens to the reactivity of the alkali metals as you move down the group? They become more reactive.
What group is known as the noble gases? Group 8 ( or group 0)
What is a molecule? The smallest individual part of an element or compound.
What physical property is used to divide the all of the elements of the periodic table into one of two catagories? Metals or non-metals
Name a non-metal that is a liquid at room temperature. Bromine
What is a compound? A substance that is made from 2 or more different types of atom chemically joined.
Name a metal that is liquid at room temperature. Mercury.
How many electrons do group 1 metals have in their outer shell? 1
State a chemical property of Group 1. They react with water and produce Hydrogen gas OR they are very reactive (stored in oil) OR they react with water leaving the solution alkaline.
How many electrons do the Halogens have in their outer shell? 7
Name a physical property of all halogens. They are all toxic.
Name a Physical property of all metals. They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
What elements are found in potassium carbonate potassium, carbon and oxygen
How many different elements are ther in a molecule of an -ide 2
How many different elements are ther in a molecule of an -ate 3
What element is always present in an - ate or -ite? Oxygen
What elements are present in a molecule of silver nitrate? sliver, nitrogen and oxygen.
What elements are present in a molecule of copper sulfate? copper, sulfur and oxygen
Name a diatomic element. Any halogen + Hydrogen + Oxygen + Nitrogen
Identify the number of atoms of each element in the compound MgSO4 1 Magnesium to 1 Sulfur to 4 Oxygen atoms
What type of bonds are found in compounds made from non-metal elements? Covalent bonds
Are ionic or covalent compounds more likely to dissolve in water? Ionic compounds
What type of bonds are found in compounds made from a metal element and a non-metal element? Ionic bonds
