Unit 6.1 Lesson 5

Quiz Review

What change of state occurs during melting? Solid to a liquid.
What change of state occurs during condensation? Gas to a liquid.
What change of state occurs during freezing? Liquid to a solid.
What change of state occurs during evaporation? Liquid to gas.
What happens to thermal energy as the process of condensation occurs? Thermal energy decreases. (The gas cools to become a liquid.)
What happens to thermal energy has the process of freezing occurs? Thermal energy decreases.. (The liquid cools to become a solid.)
What happens to thermal energy has the process of melting occurs? Thermal energy increases. (The solid warms to become a liquid.)
What happens to thermal energy has the process of evaporation occurs? Thermal energy increases. (The liquid warms to become a gas.)
Are clouds a solid, liquid, or gas? Liquid
Is snow a solid, liquid, or gas? Solid
Is water vapor in the air a solid, liquid, or gas? Gas
Imagine you take a cool water bottle out of the freezer and liquid water droplets begin to form on the outside of the bottle. What process occurs when the liquid droplets form on the bottle? Condensation
Imagine that water in a lake is warmed from the sun, causing water vapor to form in the air. What process occurs when water vapor forms in the air from the lake? Evaporation
Imagine you build a snowman on a cool sunny day. The next day you come back to find a puddle of water. What process occurs when the snowman forms a puddle? Melting
Imagine that you put a water bottle in a freezer overnight. What process will occur to the water in the freezer overnight? Freezing
When water as a gas loses thermal energy what happens to the space between particles? The space between particles gets smaller.
When water as a liquid gains thermal energy what happens to the space between particles? The space between particles gets larger.
What happens to the space between particles when water changes from a liquid to a solid. The space between particles gets larger since water expands when when it forms a solid.
What happens to the speed of particles when water changes from a liquid to a gas? The particles move more quickly.
What happens to the speed of particles when water changes from a gas to a liquid? The particles move more slowly.
What happens to the speed of particles when water changes form a liquid to a solid? The particles move more slowly.
What happens to the speed of particles when water changes from a solid to a liquid? The particles move more quickly.
What is thermal energy? The energy of moving particles (heat).
What does water as a gas do inside of a container? Water as a gas will spread out and bounce around its container.
What does water as a liquid do inside of a container? Water as a liquid will slide around on the bottom of its container.
What does water as a solid to inside of a container? Water as a solid will not move on the bottom of its container and will vibrate in place.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
