particle a small or minute portion of matter (compounds, molecules, atoms )
atom smallest particle of an element that can exist alone or with other atoms (molecules and compounds are composed or made of these)
element a substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substances; type of atom
compound a chemical substance made up of 2 or more elements (types of atoms), in a fixed ratio (same # of each element in every particle), chemically bonded to one another
molecule a chemical substance made up of one or more elements (type of atom) AND 2 or more atoms chemically bonded to each other
matter an observable substance that has mass and volume
substance a material that has a unique set of properties including a unique composition and structure
intermolecular forces forces between particles that push and pull particles together or apart
