Water Properties

8.E.1.1

QuestionAnswer
Adhesion The property of water that allows it to be attracted to or stick to other substances
Adhesion-Cohesion The two properties of water that work together and are responsible for a tree's ability to transport water from the roots all the way to top of the tree
Capillary action the combined force of cohesion and adhesion that move against the force of gravity
Cohesion the property of water responsible for water's ability to stick to other water molecules
Expansion Occurs to water molecules when freezing; molecules arrange in a lattice-structure
It is less dense than liquid water Frozen water (ice) floats because..
H2O the chemical formula for water (2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen)
Specific heat The property of water that explains why coastal areas climates do not fluctuate as severely as further inland
High specific heat Waters ability to absorb heat without drastically changing its temperature
Hydrogen positive end of water
Oxygen negative end of oxygen
Hydrogen bond type of bond between two water molecules
Surface tension this property allows a water strider to walk on the top layer of water without falling in
Polar a molecule that has an uneven sharing of electrons (ones side more positive, the other side more negative)
Surface tension the tightness on the top layer of water due to cohesion of water molecules
Universal Solvent used to describe water because it dissolves many substances
Solute The substance that is being DISSOlVED
Solution a mixture that is formed with a solute dissolves in a solvent
Density how tightly packed the atoms are in a substance water's density = 1 g/mL
Hydrophilic "water-loving"; having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or be wetted by water.
Hydrophobic "water-fearing"; tending to repel or fail to mix with water
Solvent The substance that is doing the DISSOLVING substances

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
