Cells - Life Science

DefinitionTerm
A tiny unit in an organism that is said to be alive. cell
The semipermeable coating of animal cells that holds in things inside the cell. cell membrane
The stiff outer coating of plant, fungi and bacteria cells. cell wall
The part of a plant cell that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis occurs. chloroplast
The jelly-like substance between the cell membrane and nucleus that contains the organelles and other cell bodies. cytoplasm
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information. DNA
The energy-producing organelle found in nearly all cells of plants and animals. mitochondria
The central part of a cell which contains the genetic material, and is responsible for reproduction and synthesizing protein. nucleus
A part of a cell that has a special function, much like an organ. organelle
Tiny organelles that contain RNA and manufacture protein. ribosome
An organism in which the genetic material inside of cells is contained within a distinct nucleus. eukaryote
Consisting of many cells. multicellular
A long, contractile cell that forms the muscles of the body. muscle cell
An instrument used to magnify small objects. compound light microscope
A process by which energy is released from food. cellular respiration
A single celled organisms that do not contain distinct nuclear membranes around their genetic material. prokaryote
A molecule that provides energy for cellular processes, ATP, adenosine triphosphate
Unicellular organisms that contain cell walls and ribosomes but do not contain a nuclear membrane around their genetic material or other organelles common to plant and animal cells. bacteria
Consisting of a single cell. unicellular
The process by which light energy is used to combine water and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen. photosynthesis
Folded membranes that process and move materials. endoplasmic reticulum
Stores materials. vacuoles
Breaks down food, waste and old cell parts. lysosome
A cell organelle that helps process and package proteins and lipid molecules, destined to be exported from the cell. golgi complex OR golgi apparatus
A physical process that refers to the net movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to one of lower concentration. diffusion

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
