Ocean Topography

TermDefinition
Ocean Topography The high and low points of the ocean floor along with its features.
Continental Shelf A gently sloping shallow area that extends outward from the edge of the continent.
Continental Slope A steep slope that marks the true end of the continent crust.
Abyssal Plain A smooth, nearly flat area covered with thick layer of sand and sediments.
Seamount Under water volcanic mountains.
Volcanic Island A seamount that has broken the surface of the water.
Ocean Trench A deep ocean valley usually created by the subduction of oceanic crust.
Mid-ocean Ridge Long, underwater mountain chain
Continental Rise A gently sloping area between the continental slope and the ocean basin.
Continental Margin The area made up of the continental shelf, slope and rise
