VOCABULARY

VocabularyDefinition
wave a disturbance that transfers energy form place to place
medium the material through which a wave travels (plural - media)
mechanical wave waves that require a medium through which to travel
vibration a repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion; the source of the wave
transverse waves waves that move in right angles to the direction in which the waves are traveling
crest the highest part of the wave
troughs the lowest parts of the wave
Longitudinal move the particles of the medium parallel to the direction that the waves are traveling
compressions the parts where the coils are close together
rarefactions parts where the coils are spread apart
surface waves combination of transverse and longitudinal waves
