| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anterior or Ventral | the front, in front of (equivalent to the abdominal side) |
| Distal | Away from or farthest from the point of attachment or origin |
| Dorsal or Posterior | The back, behind |
| Inferior | Below or towards the feet |
| Lateral | At or towards the side |
| Medial | Towards the body's midline |
| Proximal | Towards or closest to the point of attachment or origin |
| Superior | Above or toward the head |
| Cephallic | Toward the head or superior end |
| Rostral | Toward the forehead or nose |
| Caudal | Toward the tail or inferior end |
| Ipsilateral | On the same side of the body (right or left) |
| Contralateral | On opposite sides of the body (right or left) |
| Superficial | Closer to the body surface |
| Deep | Farther from the body surface |
