| atmosphere | a thin blanket of gases to surround the earth |
| air | a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases in the atmosphere |
| air pressure | the weight of the air |
| altitude | the measurement of the distance above sea level |
| barometer | an instrument used to measure air pressure |
| ozone | upper part of the stratosphere - a form of oxygen |
| weather | the condition of the atmosphere at any moment in time |
| troposphere | the layer of the atmosphere that is closest to the earth |
| mesosphere | where meteors/shooting stars are found |
| thermosphere | weather and communication satellites are found here |
| exosphere | the layer of the atmosphere farthest from the earth. This layer gradually fades into space |
| wind | moving air |
| air mass | a large body of air that has about the same temperature and moisture |
| front | when two unlike air masses meet, the boundary between the masses |
| cold front | cool air mass pushes itself under a weaker warm air mass |
| warm front | when a warm air mass moves over a slower cool air mass |
| stationary front | air mass pushes against each other but do not move |
| global winds | occur in large, circular belts around the earth |
| local winds | influenced by temperature changes in a small area or place |
