Genetic Vocab Review

TermDefinition
Homozygous having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes. AA or aa
Heterozygous having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes. Aa
Dominant The stronger trait that is expressed. Represented with a capital letter.
Recessive The weaker trait that is not expressed. Represented with a lower case letter.
Pedigree a chart that shows the inheritance of a trait over several generations. (a family tree)
Punnett Square a square diagram that is used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment.
Autosomal Dominant a way a genetic trait or condition can be passed down from parent to child.
Autosomal Recessive a trait, disorder, or disease can be passed down through families- but must have 2 (both) copies of the gene to be expressed.
Sex linked trait (x-linked) a trait where a gene is located on the X chromosome.
Carrier an individual who carries and is capable of passing on a genetic mutation associated with a disease and may or may not display disease symptoms.
