7.PS.3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chemical Energy | A form of potential energy that is stored in chemical bonds between atoms and molecules |
| Closed System | a system in which matter and energy exchanges do not occur across boundaries |
| Dissipated Energy | energy used up in a system, typically lost due to work done by friction, 'wasted energy' |
| Electrical Energy | Energy caused by the movement of electrons |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change |
| Ethanol Fuel | a biofuel alternative to gasoline, usually derived from corn |
| Fossil Fuels | Coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. |
| Geothermal Energy | Energy from steam or hot water produced from hot or molten underground rocks |
| Gravitational Energy | Potential energy that depends on the height of an object |
| Hydroelectric Power | Power generated from moving water |
| Kinetic Energy | the energy an object has due to its motion |
| The Law of Conservation of Energy | The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another |
| Mechanical Energy | Kinetic or potential energy associated with the motion or position of an object |
| Nuclear Energy | The potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
| Open System | a system in which exchanges of matter or energy occur across system boundaries |
| Potential Energy (PE) | the energy stored in an object because of its position or composition |
| Radiant Energy-Light | Energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves, often from an object like the sun or a light bulb |
| Sound Energy | Energy caused by an objects vibrations of particles |
| Thermal Energy | The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance |
| Transfer | to move from one place to another |
| Transform | to change in form or appearance |
| Turbine | A device with blades that can be turned by water, wind, steam, or exhaust gas from combustion that turns a generator in an electricity-producing plant |
