Plate Boundaries

TermDefinition
Tectonic Plates The theory that Earth's outer crust is divided into several plates
What boundary creates Mountain Ranges Created by convergent boundaries.
What is a Subduction Zone When two plates slide under or over one another.
Why does an Earthquake occur. Occurs when the pressure built up along a fault line becomes so great that the rocks on either side of the fault suddenly rip apart.
What is a Plate Boundary Where 2 plates meet. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes most commonly happen here.
What happens in a Transform Boundary Plates slip sideways past each other creating earthquakes. Crust is neither created or destroyed.
Convergent Boundary Two crusts collide and push against each other. This pressure causes both plates to rise
Divergent Boundary Two oceanic crusts diverge and create a mid-ocean ridge (mountains under the ocean). New crust is created.
What boundary forma a Mid-Atlantic Ridge Created by divergent boundaries.
Converging Colliding or coming together
Diverging Dividing or moving apart
What is a Volcano A cone shaped mountain or hill which usually has a crater or depression at the summit.
Who thought of the theory of Sea Floor Spreading and what does it do. Harry Hess discovered sea floor spreading. Magma rises from gaps in the crust and when it hardens it forms new crust.
Ring of Fire A long chain of volcanoes that surround the Pacific Ocean. Site of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Created by plate boundaries
What are Convection Currents Transfers of energy in the mantle.
What created the Cascades Volcanoes Created by converging continental oceanic crusts
What created Volcanic Islands Created by converging oceanic oceanic crusts
What created the Rift Valley in Africa Created by a divergent boundary.
Transforming Sliding past each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
