| chromosome | structures in nucleus of the cell that controls the cell's activities |
| chromosomes are copied | First, the cell copies its chromosomes. It makes two complete sets one for each cell. |
| chromosomes line up | The two sets of chromosomes line up in the center of the cell. |
| chromosomes separate | Then, the two sets of the chromosomes separate. Each set moves toward an opposite side of cell. |
| cell divides | Finally, the cytoplasm divides, forming two new cells. |
| fertilization | the joining of a sperm cell and an egg cell. |
| fertilized egg | the cell that results when an egg cell and a sperm cell unite. |
| one-cell reproduction (ameba) | cell divides and produces two new "offspring" cells |
| many-celled reproduction | cells keep dividing and stay together in a growing organism |
| pollination | movement of pollen from stamen to a pistol |
