Identification and Adaptations of Organisms

TermDefinition
Adaptation a change in structure or habits (behavior), often hereditary, by which an organism improves its condition in relationship to its environment
Hibernation a slowed physiological state of an organism to survive long periods of cold temperature or reduce food supplies
Hybrid An offspring resulting from the cross of two different species of subspecies
Dichotomous key a tool used to identify species of organisms using opposing observable characteristics
Migration Seasonal movement to a different geographical region where conditions are more favorable
Natural selection Process by which organisms with favorable traits produce more successful offspring than organisms with less-favorable traits, causing the favorable traits to become more common in the population
Physiology the way in which a living organism or bodily part functions
Population all of the members of a species living in a particular area at a particular time
Selective breeding making deliberate crosses of plants or mating of animals, so the offspring will have a desired characteristic derived from one of the parents
Species a group of organisms with similar characteristics that are able to interbreed or exchange genetic material
Taxonomy the branch of science that formally names and classifies organisms by their structure, function, and relationships
Trait a characteristic of an organism; can be genetic or acquired
Variation a different form or version of something
