Hydrosphere and Bios
3.1 Hydrosphere and Biosphere Interactions 5th grade
Term | Definition |
---|---|
hydrosphere | all of the water on, under, and above the Earth |
biosphere | that part of Earth in which life can exist |
ecosystems | An ecosystem is a community of living things (including plants, animals, and people), the environment that surrounds them (including soil, water, and air), and how they interact. |
ocean ecosystem (oceans) | a large body of salt water that covers most of Earth occurring in large low areas; very deep saltwater, very cold temperatures at the bottom layer, and rough currents; is large enough to contain many ecosystems |
estuary ecosystem (estuaries) | a coastal body of water where fresh water from a river mixes with salt water from the ocean; were river basins before they flooded |
salinity | the total quantity of dissolved salts in water; how much salt is present |
wetlands | an area of land where there is water on the surface or where the soil is completely filled with water for at least part of the year; will form at the edge of water where the water is shallow |
tundra | extremely cold climate located near the North and South Poles and on the tops of mountains; receives very little precipitation and has no trees |
grassland | an area of land covered mostly with grass with few bushes or trees |
water ecosystem | rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, marshes, estuaries, and oceans |
current | the movement of electric charges through a material; the speed at which electric charges move through a material; the movement of liquid through a passageway or through another other liquid |
lakes | large, and often deep, inland bodies of fresh standing water |
rainforest | a forest that is humid and rainy for much of a year |
oceans on Earth | there are 5: The Arctic Ocean, the Southern Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean |
atmosphere | layers of gas that surround a planet |
geosphere | Earth's crust, both beneath the oceans and continents, as well as the mantle and inner and outer core |
intertidal zone | shallow area along the ocean between the high tide and the low tide |
abyssal zone | the zone of deep ocean below a depth of 4000 meters |
brackish | mixture of salt and freshwater |
biomes | all regions of the world with similar climates, plant and animals |
