Cell Growth/Division

The Cell Cycle and Mitosis

TermDefinition
cell division the process by which a cell divides into two daughter cells
sexual reproduction a type of reproduction in which cells from two parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism
asexual reproduction the process of reproduction involving a single parent that result in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
chromosomes threadlike structures of DNA and protein that contain genetic information
chromatin substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones
cell cycle a series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for cell division, and divides to form two daughter cells
interphase a period of the cell cycle before cell division occurs; includes G1 Phase, S Phase, and G2 Phase
mitosis a part of eukaryotic cell division during which the nucleus divides
cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells
chromatid one of two identical "sister" parts or "arms" of a duplicated chromosome
centromere the region of a chromosome in which the two sister chromatids attach
centriole a structure in an animal cell that aids in cell division
prophase the first and longest phase of mitosis in which the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and becomes visible as chromosomes
metaphase a phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up across the center/equator of the cell
anaphase a phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles/ends of the cell
telophase a phase of mitosis in which the distinct individual chromosomes begin to spread and create a tangle of chromatin as two new daughter cells are formed

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
