What are the raw materials that plants use up when they photosynthesise? Carbon dioxide & Water
What are the products of photosynthesis? Sugar (glucose) & Oxygen
Where in a plant cell does photosynthesis take place? In the chloroplasts.
What is a consumer? An organism that eats another organism to get its energy.
What is a population? The NUMBER of organisms of one type in an ecosystem.
What is the community? All of the organisms in an ecosytem (plants, animals and microbes).
What is a habitat? The place where an organism lives.
What does a herbivore eat? Plants
What does a carnivore eat? Animals
What does an omnivore eat? Plants & Animals
What do the arrows in a foodchain show? The direction of energy flow.
What is a predator? An animal that hunts and eats other animals.
What is a prey? An animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal.
What happens to a predator in a food web if one of it's prey dies out? Its population decreases
What happens to a prey in a food web if one of it's predators dies out? Its population increases
What happens to a predator in a food web if one of it's prey population increases? Its population increases
What processes increase the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere? Respiration and Combustion (and Decomposition)
What organisms are responsible for Decomposition Micro-organisms (bacteria)
What natural process removes CO2 from the atmosphere? Photosynthesis
What do plants store sugar (glucose) as? Starch
What is a chemical test for starch? Iodine test (iodine turns blue-black)
What event do we associate with increasing CO2 levels? Global warming or Greenhouse effect
What form of nitrogen can plants absorb through their roots? Nitrate.
What do plants produce using Nitrates? Amino acids
What do plants make from amino acids? Protein
What is routinely added to the soil in farms to increase plant growth? Fertilisers
How do fertilisers increase plant growth? They contain Nitrate.
What can organic farmers add to their soil to increase plant growth?? Manure
What type of chemical can be sprayed ocer crops to kill weeds? Herbicide
What can organic farmers spray onto crops to control weed growth? Vinegar or soap
What type of chemical can be sprayed over crops to kill insects? Pesticides (insecticides)
What can organic farmers do to reduce insect numbers? Introduce the insect's natural predator e.g. ladybirds eat greenfly (aphids)
What can be used to sample the variety and number of insects in an area? Pitfall traps
Why should pitfall traps be checked regularly? To stop the insects eating each other.
Why should pitfall traps be camouflaged? To stop birds seeing and eating the trapped insects.
Why should pitfall traps be "flush" with the soil surface? So that the insects can fall into the trap.
What can be used to sample the variety and number of plants in an area? A quadrat
How many quadrats fit into 1 metre squared? 4
How many quadrats would fit into an area of 125 metres squared? 500
