Includes 7th Grade understanding of Metabolism, Nutrients, Hormones, Etc.

TermDefinition
Nutrients Substances that are important to living things. Living things (Including Humans) can't survive w/out Nutrients.
Food Any substance that provides nutritional support for the body. (Also known as Nutrients)
Calories The amount of energy stored in food, which can be used for functions and processes in the body.
Metabolism The sum of all chemical reactions that take place in an individual.
Hormones Chemical messengers, they can make cells speed up, slow down, or stop certain things.
What Hormone(s) does the Thyroid produce and how do they effect Metabolism? Thyroxin, the more Thyroxin released, the faster the metabolic reactions occur.
What Hormone(s) do the Adrenal Glands produce and how do they effect Metabolism? Corticosteroids, they increase the breakdown of Carbohydrates, Fats, and Proteins. Speeding up the Metabolic Rate.
What are the 4 main things that effect Metabolism and Metabolic Rate? 1.Hormones 2.Diet 3. Age 4. Exercise
What are Tissues? Groups of similar cells that work together or carry out specific tasks.
What are Organs? Groups of different tissues that work together and perform a certain job.
What is an Organ System? Groups of different Organs that work to complete a series of tasks.
Nervous System A system made up of nerves, a spinal cord, and Brain. It's responsible for carrying information and responding to said information.
Circulatory System A system made up of Blood, the Heart, and all related vessels that carry and distribute Blood. It transports Oxygen and nutrients to all cells in the body. Also known as the Cardiovascular System
Respiratory System A system made up of the Mouth, Nasal Cavities, Lungs, Larynx, Trachea, and Bronchial Tubes. It's responsible for supplying you body with Oxygen
Digestive System A system made up of the Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Rectum, and Anus. It's responsible for processing food into useful nutrients for your body.
Excretory System Also known as the Urinary system, this is a system made up of the Liver, Kidneys, and Bladder. It rids the blood of wastes and controls blood volume by removing excess water produced by cells.
Skeletal System A system made up of Bones, Ligaments, and Cartilage. It's responsible for supporting the body.
Muscular System A system made up of a wide variety of tissues and organs responsible for Voluntary and Involuntary movement.
Immune System Responsible for keeping you healthy and fighting diseases that enter your body.
Endocrine System A system of ductless glands throughout the body that assist in the control of life processes or metabolism.
Reproductive System The system of a Human or Animal that is responsible for carrying on the species.
Integumentary System A system tat is made up of Skin, Hair, Nails, Glands, and Nerves.
What does the Integumentary System do? Protect from Water loss and the outside environment.
Aerobic Cellular Respiration A series of Chemical reactions that break down food molecules and release energy using Oxygen.
Anaerobic Cellular Respiration A series of Chemical reactions that break down food molecules and release energy NOT using Oxygen.
