Earthquake vocab

A study stack about earthquakes.

TermDefinition
Ring of Fire An area bordering the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanoes occur.
Plate Tectonics Slow moving plates that bump into each other, slide past each other, or pull apart from each other.
Richter Scale Measures the strength or magnitude of an earthquake from 1-10.
Epicenter The point on the earth’s surface directly above the focus.
Primary Waves The first wave. Can move through solid and liquid layers of the earth. Considered a body wave. Not as strong.
Secondary Waves The second wave and the stronger wave. Slower and can move through solid layers.
Tsunami A powerful series of waves created by underwater earthquakes.
Focus The place that the earthquake originates. Normally underground.
