Heat

QuestionAnswer
What is temperature? The average kinetic energy of the particles of a substance.
What is heat? A form of energy that flows from hot objects (greater kinetic energy) to cooler object (less kinetic energy).
What is kinetic energy? The energy of movement.
What is radiation or radiant energy? Energy that travels in invisible waves from a source (like the sun).
True or False: The sun is the only source of radiant energy? False - anything that is hot will radiate some heat energy
What is conduction? Heat energy moving by particles touching/bumping into each other to transfer heat.
What is convection? Currents of air being warmed, speeding up, rising up, because it is less dense, then cooling, sinking, because it is more dense, and is reheated again to continue the cycle
What objects absorb more energy? dark colored and rough
What objects reflect more energy? light colored and smooth
Wood is an example of an... insulator
Metal is an example of a... conductor
What do we call a substance that does conduct heat/electricity easily? conductor
What do we call a substance that does not conduct heat/electricity well? insulator
Making a grilled cheese sand which is an example of what type of heat transfer? conduction
Boiling a pot of water to make Ramen noodles is an example of which type of heat transfer? convection
Making toast is an example of which type of heat transfer? radiation
The lava flowing in a Lava Lamp is an example of which type of heat transfer? convection
Currents of air being heated, speeding up, rising because the current is less dense, then cooling, sinking because it is more dense, and then reheated to create a cycle is an example of which type of heat transfer? convection
The transfer of energy through particles touching is called? conduction
The transfer of energy moving in waves is called? radiation
Using a tanning bed is an example of which type of heat transfer? radiation
Ironing your shirt is an example of which type of heat transfer? conduction
If heat comes out of the floor vents in my house, this situation is an example of which type of heat transfer? convection
Why do baseball players wear white jerseys? white colored objects reflect energy/heat
Why are most winter coats darker colours? dark coloured objects absorb heat/energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
